IDP – Entity Extraction

Entity Extraction, also known as Named Entity Recognition (NER), is a text analysis technique which enables machines to sift through vast amounts of textual information and extract nuggets of valuable data.

First step in the working of NER splitting the extracted text into different tokens. Then potential named entities are detected using recognition patterns such as capitalization and specific formats. These identified entities are categorized into predefined classes, usually using labelled datasets. Surrounding context is often considered to improve accuracy. Results can be refined in post-processing by resolving ambiguities, merging multi-token entities and using knowledge bases to enhance entity data.

BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) has shown state-of-the-art results in a wide variety of NLP tasks by applying bidirectional training of transformer to language modelling. As opposed to directional models which read the text sequentially, the transformer encoder reads the entire sequence of words at once. BROS (BERT Relying on Spatiality) is an encoder only transformer model that takes a sequence of tokens and their bounding boxes as input. The overall structure is identical to that of BERT with the exception of the positional encoding. It makes use of TMLM (as in BERT) and Area Masked Language Model. Hence, we utilised BROS model for Entity Extraction in IDP, specifically for documents such as invoices.
